"I’ve got nothing to lose that I can’t get back again." Neil Young
You know how you have days where it feels like every move you make is going in a different direction than you thought your life would go and you don’t really know if the way you’re moving forward is the best thing for you? Annnnnd queue the mind going in a million different directions.
Well as you can tell, my labor day weekend is very contemplative this year. Mid-20s is a really tough age range, because we feel like we should have achieved so much more by now; like be engaged, be on track to having kids, be making more money, seen more, done more, etc. ( obviously we don’t all need to have that at this stage in our lives, but we’re told that it’s important, and of course it is, it just may not be for everyone*yes this is a disclaimer). But if you’re like me, you’re constantly searching for more and wanting to do more, and sometimes when making plans for the future you think of your past like “well what if I’d done that, my life would be so different today”…and then while having these thoughts the song that came up on my Neil Young playlist sings “I’ve got nothing to lose that I can’t get back again.”
If we’re supposed to have something, it will be ours; it’s our destiny and nothing can change that. Don’t worry about what could have been, because if it’s your it will be, but perhaps not in the way you expect it. It also speaks to just let it be, live your life, you’ve got nothing to lose and if you do lose it, don’t worry it will come back to you in some shape or form.
Like the way I heard the lyrics in the song- I’m one of those people who doesn’t listen to song lyrics, I listen to the instruments. I just happen to hear that line at the right time and it resonated with me and how I was feeling at that specific moment- I couldn’t even go back and tell you which song it’s in if I wanted to. But that’s life, you can’t go back and trace a particular moment to figure out what it meant, it just happens and we have to move on.
Basically just breathe and live your life for you and no one else, not afraid of what lies ahead or what other people will think; because we each have our own path to walk and we must walk it alone. Being my toughest critic, sometimes I forget that.
And when in doubt, just relax and listen to Neil Young. That is all.
